Embedded Systems Engineer

Develop reliable avionics to enable life-saving drone missions!

Full-time · Amsterdam

About Avy

Avy pioneers unmanned aviation technology for emergency services and life-saving applications. We partner with innovative organizations that are among the first in the world to integrate long-range drone operations into their daily workflows.

We thrive on innovation, agility, and bold ideas and we’ve developed a range of cutting-edge products that are ready to make impact at scale. We’re an award winning scale up in the aviation industry, we pride ourselves for combining an innovative garage startup culture with being a professional and safety minded aviation organisation.

About the role

Avy builds autonomous VTOL drones that soar through the skies at 120 meters altitude and speeds of up to 100 km/h—faster than your average highway traffic jam. These high-tech marvels rely on a network of embedded systems that must work seamlessly together.

We are looking for an Embedded Systems Engineer to supercharge the reliability, functionality, and overall performance of our drone fleet by developing robust and dependable avionics. You will contribute to Avy’s mission of sustainable, life-saving drone network - making the world a better place while working on state of the art drone technology with real world impact!

As part of the Embedded Systems team, you’ll design, develop, test, and maintain the electronic and computing subsystems across Avy’s products. That means designing PCBs, writing firmware, and making the cabling inside our flagship VTOL drone, Aera. You will also be working on servos, motors, ESCs for propulsion, and smart controllers and chargers for our autonomous docking stations. In short, if it has got wires and code, you will have a hand in making it work flawlessly.

And the best part? You won’t just be stuck behind a desk—you get to see your designs out in the field take flight through Avy’s fleet.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain C firmware for embedded systems;

  • Design and integrate drivers for sensors, communication protocols, and control systems used in drones;

  • Design PCBs for drone avionics and hardware;

  • Debug, test, and validate PCBs, cables, and electrical subsystems to ensure reliability;

  • Collaborate with mechanical, software, and production engineers on drone avionics integration;

  • Optimize drone performance in terms of efficiency, power consumption, and reliability.

About you

You are a passionate, hands-on Embedded Systems Engineer who has at least 2 years of work experience ideally with a Bachelor's degree in Embedded Systems, Electronics, Computer Engineering or a similar field. You are enthusiastic about drone technology and are eager to learn and contribute as part of a multi disciplinary team.

Requirements

  • Strong experience in embedded C programming, particularly for STM32 microcontrollers with knowledge of peripherals such as SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, etc and writing bare metal code;

  • Experience with multi layer PCB design (Experience with Altium is a plus);

  • Experience in debugging and troubleshooting embedded hardware and software.

Competencies

We are looking for someone who is passionate about drones and electronics. Any hands-on experience building, flying, or working with UAV systems is a big plus. You are able to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. You have strong problem-solving skills and pay attention to detail.
